Soldiers’ Blood Rescues Mother, Shashi & Her Baby

The timely intervention of a group of soldiers, including an officer for offer of required blood type to a 34-year old woman for delivery of her baby at Mancholai Government Hospital in Mathawalasinhakulam, Mullaittivu area, rescued her life on time on Thursday (19).

Medical Officers of the Blood Bank at Mancholai Government Hospital, attending on the pregnant woman, Mrs S. Shashi (34) of Oddusuddan, found that she urgently needs vital O (ORh+) positive blood category for delivery, but non-availability of the type of blood, has placed her life in grave danger at the time of the delivery.

A hospital authority turned to the Commander, Colonel W.M.G.C.S.B Wijeyasundara, 592 Brigade Headquarters, the nearest Army camp, and asked for immediate assistance as platelets in the blood count were fast decreasing in the wake of her scheduled delivery time.

Responding to the SOS appeal, 592 Brigade Commander dispatched one officer and 7 soldiers with the same category of blood to the Mancholai Government Hospital where a total of 750 ml was donated by Army personnel to the Blood Bank for safe delivery of the baby.

Just after two hours of the donation, she delivered the baby safely but the baby has to be kept on the incubator at the Intensive Care Unit, considering the baby’s low weight. However the baby’s life is out of danger according to the doctors and those troops spoke to the mother and wished her well before their exit from the hospital.
