Soldiers Offer Lunch to Elderly at Puttur

Troops attached to Atchelu-based 511 Brigade in Jaffna recently treated the inmates at the Puttur Elders’ Home to lunch on account of the Poson Full Moon Poya Day.

The Puttur Elders’ Home provides shelter to about 50 elderly men and women who have no source of income for survival or any relatives to call theirs. In some instances, children of most of those elders are living abroad and have completely forgotten them, according to Ms. Thevamalar Thevadasan, the Matron of the Home.

Soldiers of the Brigade cooked meals for those neglected senior citizens and offered those meals with their own hands to all residing and working at the place. In addition to meals, each of them was given soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes and medical items as gifts.

Before the meals, troops of the 9th Battalion of Sri Lanka Light Infantry at Kopay cleaned the entire compound and its surroundings, adjoining both the Elders’ Home and the Methodist Church. Civil Affairs Office in the 511 Brigade organized the event.

Meanwhile, soldiers of the 3rd Battalion of Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment organized a soft drink Dansela for civilians passing Urelu area on Jaffna-Palaly main road in connection with the Poson.
