Soldiers Extinguish Raging Manalkadu &;amp; Mamaduwa Wildfires

More than 200 Army soldiers by Saturday (18), effectively brought a raging wildfire in Peduruthuduwani-Manalkadu areas without letting it spread further.

Troops dug drains around the area where the fire was raging and simultaneously pruned trees and branches that were in contact with affected areas.

The fire, believed to have been caused by illicit timber fellers, making use of the prevailing dry weather, was brought under control with the active support received from soldiers serving Manalkadu and Kudaththanai areas.

On a few past occasions, the Army spotted illicit fellers and requested the Police to arrest them.

Meanwhile, soldiers serving the general area Mamaduwa in 56 Division Vavuniya, doused a man-made wildfire that destroyed more than 7 acres in a 35 km stretch of paddy lands. It was found that an accidental fall of a stove while a civilian was boiling some water caused the spread of fire covering more than 7 acres.

Troops of 21 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment and 11 Sri Lanka National Guard contributed to control of the fire.
