Corporal M.D.G.S Karunarathna of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, Regimental HQ Battalion (15 (v) SLSR) representing the National Wheelchair Cricket team participated in the selection tournament in the Asian Wheelchair Cricket Tournament - 2023 in Gujarat, India for differently able cricketers.
The selection tournament was held from 23 - 29 March 2023. Corporal M.D.G.S Karunarathna who had actively contributed to the war against LTTE terrorists before May 2009 sustained serious injuries and was confined to a wheelchair upon medical advice.
Teams from 4 Asian countries participated in the tournament and the Sri Lankan team of wheelchair cricketers were able to emerge as the runners-up in the tournament.
This medically-boarded out Non-Commissioned Officer fell victim to an LTTE explosive device and lost his both legs below the knee in 2008 while the war against terrorism was underway.
