SLSC War Heroes Revered on Corps Day

Signallers in the Sri Lanka Signal Corps (SLSC) giving due reverence and prominence to fallen War Heroes commemorated their 74th anniversary on Thursday (19) with several programmes lined up at the SLSC Regimental Headquarters in Panagoda.

The event was graced by SLSC Colonel Commandant, Major General Ajith Wijesinghe as the Chief Guest, accompanied by a large gathering of retired and serving Senior Officers, Officers, Other Rankers, ladies of the SLSC Seva Vanitha Unit in addition to 190 family members of 272 deceased SLSC War Heroes.

Brigadier Ashoka Peiris, SLSC Centre Commandant welcomed the day’s Chief Guest, Major General Ajith Wijesinghe, SLSC Colonel Commandant on arrival at the venue.

At the War Hero monument premises, a two-minute silence in memory of all War Heroes inaugurated the day’s agenda, amid religious observances of all major religions, led by members of the clergy before the SLSC Colonel Commandant laid a floral wreath at the foot of the memorial. Retired senior officers and family members of fallen War Heroes followed suit and paid their respect afterwards recalling heroic acts of those War Heroes.

The memorial ceremony reached its end with the sounding of the Last Post and the Reveille in accordance with military formalities before trumpeters added their ceremonial melodies to mark the culmination of honours.

A ‘Pirith’ chanting ceremony on Monday (16) to invoke blessings on the SLSC, followed by the ‘Heel Daana’ (breakfast) and the alms (Sangeeka Daana) to members of the Maha Sangha, the following day added more importance to the anniversary events.

On Thursday (19), to be in line with military formalities, a Guard Turnout and a parade accorded a salute to the SLSC Colonel Commandant in the presence of a gathering of SLSC family members.

The day’s SLSC programme reached its climax with an All Rank lunch, headed by the Colonel Commandant, the same afternoon.

Sri Lanka Signal Corps was raised under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel D.V Brohier (Rtd) on 19 October 1943.
