SLMM HEAD MEETS SF COMMNDER &; POLICE CHIEF IN JAFFNA

Head, Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) Major Gen Trond Furuhovde (Retd) after his recent assumption of duties was in Jaffna on Monday (16 February 2004) in a bid to receive an update of the current situation and other developments in the war-affected peninsula..

At this specially convened meeting at SLMM Jaffna office, Major Gen Furuhovde met Commander, Security Forces Headquarters Jaffna Major General M. D. S Chandrapala, Deputy Commander, Security Forces Headquarters Jaffna Major General D.V.S. Y Kulathunga and Senior Superintendent of Police including several senior officers of the Armed Forces, the Police and SLMM representatives.

Major General Chandrapala in his presentation to the visiting SLMM Head outlined the current security situation prevailing in the peninsula after the ceasefire agreement was signed. During this meet, he also touched on the question of resettlement, troop deployment, status quo related to internally displaced persons, promotion of human rights concerns among members of the troops and also on the ongoing de-mining programme in the peninsula while taking the population concentrations in Jaffna into serious consideration.

Senior Superintendent of Police-Jaffna D.S.R. Wanaguru explained in detail how the Police would act in the peninsula during the oncoming general election.

Mr. Ulf Bjomfors also attended the conference which was held for over one hours.
