Barely a few days after two heroic soldiers rescued a drowning infant in Mankulam, Kilinochchi on the eve of the Army Day (Oct 10), an identical adventure of several Army soldiers, working for Mullaittivu-based Keppapilaw Model Village, rescued the life of another 14-month old infant girl who had by accident fallen into a 30-feet deep well Sunday (12) afternoon.
On hearing a noisy commotion in the Keppapilaw Model Village complex, still being built for resettled people, a group of soldiers, engaged in construction work, rushed to the premises to witness several panicking and emotionally-moved civilians, were weeping and peeping into a deep huge well in despair after the infant, Prasandan Jenistar (14 months old), fell into it.
4 Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) soldiers of the 592 Brigade, taking no chance, rushed to the scene and improvised a method promptly with the only option available to descend the depth, using the lone rope with a bucket, hanging as hopes for the infant’s survival, was fast dwindling.
However, Private M.P.S.S Sanjeewa, touched by the drowning scene at the bottom, impetuously held on to the rope and hurriedly, scuttled along the walls of the deep well while fellow-soldiers who arrived there, were managing the thin rope from outside.
Private Sanjeewa, ignoring risks for his own life, fearlessly dived into the bottom, filled with water, and instantly swam back to the surface, holding the infant in one hand, and the rope with the other. As he was able to stand on foot inside water, keeping the unconscious baby facing downwards, Private Sanjeewa, began resuscitating practices with full force, and managed finally to regain her consciousness as two more fellow-soldiers, by then, reached the bottom of the well.
The rescued baby girl with the consent of her father, Maniwal Prasandan (30) of No 170, A House, Keppapilaw Model Village, was quickly admitted to the Ward No 2 at Mullaittivu District Hospital, the same afternoon with the help of the Army troops.
Brigadier N.A.P.C Napagoda, General Officer Commanding, 59 Division upon hearing the bravery, shown by his troops of the 592 Brigade, went there and offered his congratulations on the spot, together with the appreciations, extended by Major General Jagath Dias, Commander, Security Force Headquarters - Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT).
The rescue team was comprised of 2 Lieutenant H.R.N Sanjeewa, Lance Corporal M.A.G Udaya Kumara, Lance Corporal P.L.K Mihiranga, Private M.P.S.S Sanjeewa, Private W.M Sumith Kumara, Corporal K.P Dikman Kumara, Lance Corporal R.D.T.P Wijesooriya and Lance Corporal S.S.P Fernando who joined hands together to rescue this toddler.
