SLEME & SLAWC Squash Players Emerge Champions

The Inter Regiment Squash Championship -2019, one of the most interesting showpieces in the calendar of Army sports took place Wednesday (23) evening at the squash court in the Panagoda gymnasium.

The final exhibition match, witnessed by Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Commander of the Army as the Chief Guest, added a new dimension to the day’s event since it was the first time a dual match of this type was played in the Army in the presence of a large gathering.

Brigadier N.P Gunawardene, Chairman, Army Squash Committee warmly welcomed the day’s Chief Guest to the occasion and conducted him to the court premises.

Before the day’s award ceremony got to a start, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, together with Officers and other attendees witnessed an exhibition match, played by Sri Lanka’s Best Male player, Ravindu Laksiri (Ranking No 1) and the Best Female player, Shami Wakeel (Ranking No 1) at national level.

This was the 1st time an exhibition match in doubles was played in squash history as per records.

Similarly, 2nd and 3rd rankers at national level in squash, Ms Fathoun Issadeen (2) and Ms Kasuni Gunawardena (3) also joined to exhibit their skills in the same doubles, adding colour to the occasion.

Towards the end of the day’s proceedings, the day’s Chief Guest was invited to give away the trophies, certificates and medals to the winners and outstanding participants.

The Championship (male) of the year was won by the Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SLEME) and the runner-up were the Gajaba Regiment players.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (SLAWC) won the Championship (women) and Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police emerged as the runner up in the female category.
