SLEME's 'Walawe Supercross' Thunders in Sevanagala &;amp; Stuns Spectators

The 2nd  ‘Walawe Supercross – 2012’, the new leaf, added last year to the calendar of Army motor car and motorbike racing field, kicked off  Sunday (24) to a thrilling and exciting start at the Udawalawe Supercross track in Sevanagala, Udawalawe, amidst a huge gathering of spectators.
 
This year’s event received further teeth when Sri Lanka Motor Cycle Club (SLMCC), together with the Army Motor Sports Committee (AMSC), lined up 25 events in total, including six motor car and four motorbike events for the day.
 
Organized by Sri Lanka Army Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SLEME) Regiment for the second time in its history, has received the fullest blessings of SLMCC, AMSC and veterans in the field, making the event to be of international standards.
 
Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya ceremonially inaugurated the event raising the Army Flag signaling the onset of the day’s proceedings. Major General A. L. R Wijetunge, Colonel Commandant SLEME and Deputy Chief of Staff hoisted the SLEME flag in accordance with Army traditions.  The official website, ‘Walawe Supercross’ (www.walawesupercross.com) provides an update directly from the track every half an hour.
 
Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army as a keen enthusiast witnessed the day’s stunning feats and distributed a section of the trophies to the winners as the Chief Guest.
 
The newly built track of about 1.5 km in length, provided an ideal venue to drivers and riders to test their machines without any restrictions prior to the final grand events. A model aircraft display attracted the spectators as a new highlight to the novel event in the province.

Shehan De Silva was chosen as the Best Driver while Shehan Adikari was adjudged the Best Rider.
 
All racing competitions covered following categories; Street Trail up to 125 cc, Trucks & Jeeps Forces Event, Subaru up to 2200 cc Non Turbo, Racing Motorcycles up to 85 cc - Under 13 years, Street Trail up to 125 cc (2T & 4T), Cars -Mini 7 up to 1000 cc, Cars - Ford Laser / Mazda 1300 cc, Motor Cycles PW & QR up to 50 cc - Under 10 years), Cars - Nissan March up to 1000 cc, Motocross Bikes up to 85 cc (2T) & up to 150 cc (4T) - Under 16 years, Super Motard up to 250 cc, Ford Laser / Mazda 1500 cc, Cars up to 1050 cc, Cars up to 1600 cc, Street Trail up to 250 cc (2T & 4T), Motocross Bikes up to 125 cc (2T & 4T), Trucks & Jeeps Diesel Turbo up to 5500 cc, Cars up to 1500 cc, Motocross Bikes up to 125 cc (2T) & up to 250 cc (4T), Super Motard up to 450 cc, Street Trail OPEN (2T & 4T), Cars up to 3500 cc, Motocross Bikes OPEN, Trucks & Jeeps OPEN.
