The Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) Headquarters at Seethawaka in a fitting military ceremony welcomed its 48th Commandant, Major General Channa Weerasuriya when he arrived there to assume office on Wednesday (15).
The Senior Officer on arrival was warmly received by the Inspector of Training at the SLAVF HQ, Brigadier S.N Samarawickrama before he was ushered to the saluting dais in the company of the SLAVF Deputy Commandant, Major General J.D.C.G Jayasinghe in order to receive the salute in the formal Guard of Honour, presented by Sri Lanka Light Infantry troops.
Amidst religious rites and rituals and chanting of ‘Seth Pirith’ by Maha Sangha, the formal acceptance of duties took place in his new office where he placed his signature for a document symbolically.
During his inaugural speech to the troops, the new SLAVF Commandant highlighted the importance of the SLAVF role in relation to the country’s security and nation-building tasks. He also urged SLAVF all ranks to work dedicatedly for the best interest of the organization and the country while safeguarding its reputation.
Signifying the inauguration of the office as the Commandant, Major General Channa Weerasuriya planted a sapling in the Headquarters premises. The senior officer afterwards interacted with all ranks during refreshments.
Senior Officers, Officers and Other Ranks presented the occasion, and extended their best compliments. The programme of the day got underway sticking to health guidelines.
