The final leg of the much-awaited Inter Regiment Volleyball Championship - 2019 and the Inter Battalion Netball Championship of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) got off the ground at Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium on Wednesday (25).
Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Commander of the Army by gracing to witness the finals in both tournaments as the Chief Guest attached greater significance to the final tussles between Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) and Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) which gave excitement and thrill to the spectators. 20 male teams of the SLAVF competed under two categories; Super League and ‘A’ Division in the Inter Regiment Volleyball Championship - 2019. However, SLSR team after a close encounter was crowned as Champions.
Finals in the women’s Inter Battalion Volleyball and Netball Championships also got underway during the tournament by producing five teams, each for both Championships. 4 Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (4 SLAWC) and Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps (SLAGSC) teams vied in the finals but the 4 SLAWC emerged Champions in volleyball. Likewise, 4 SLAWC and 5 SLAWC fought against each other in the netball finals. Once again, 4 SLAWC team finally secured the Championship in netball.
Major General Nirmal Dharmaratne, Commandant, SLAVF welcomed the Commander of the Army on arrival at the stadium. After a brief welcome address of the SLAVF Commandant, the finals got to a start. Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, together with a few more Senior Officers at the end of the day’s event gave away trophies, cash prizes and certificates to the winners.
The Commander finally at the invitation of the SLAVF Commandant read out the citation for the closure of the annual SLAVF event as a formality. Before the vote of thanks was proposed by the Deputy Commandant, the SLAVF Commandant, Major General Nirmal Dharmaratne presented an appreciative memento to the day’s Chief Guest. affiliate tracking url | Sneakers
