SLAVF Inter Regiment Athletic Meet Begins

The finals of the Inter Regiment Athletic Championship Tournament of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) commenced on Tuesday (14) at Diyagama Stadium.

Major General Channa Goonetilleke, Commandant, SLAVF graced the opening ceremony as the Chief Guest.

Over 600 athletes, representing 20 men’s teams and 5 women’s teams, belonging to more than 100 Volunteer Battalions will compete in the three-day long tournament.

On arrival, the Chief Guest of the inaugural day was warmly welcomed and ushered to the special dais. Afterwards, Volunteer Force Flag and Sports Flag were hoisted by Major General Channa Goonetilleke and Major General W. D. L. P Wickramasinghe, Deputy Commandant, SLAVF respectively with the Army Song being recited. Subsequently two minutes silence was observed in the memory of Fallen War Heroes.

Ceremonial Opening of the event by the Chief Guest was marked with the lighting of the Olympic Torch held by veteran athletes Private A.K.M Ashrof of Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (SLEME) and Private M. K. W. D. Wickramasinghe of Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (SLAWC).

 The oath of the players and the oath of judges were read respectively by Lance Corporal M. E. M .I .G .A .M Herath an athlete and Mr Lal Chandrakumara, Vice President of Athletics Association of Sri Lanka and a senior adjudicate of Athletics Association.

Subsequent to the Championship 2015 being declared open, the Chief Guest walked to the arena with the Deputy Commandant, Colonel General Staff and Sports Officer Major S.A.M. Subasinghe of the Volunteer Force and congratulated the sports representatives.

Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva will grace the closing ceremony of the SLAVF Inter Regiment Athletic Championship Tournament on Thursday (16).
