SLAVF HQ Joins 'Green Agriculture' Drive Planting Rare Saplings inside Compound

Aimed at restoring the eco-balance in the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) HQ compound and transforming its soldiers as green soldiers with the intention of forming a green brigade, ready for crop cultivation, the SLAVF Headquarters took an initiative to plant more than 2000 endemic, indigenous and lessor known fruit saplings in order to implement the green concept on Tuesday (28).

Major General Sujeewa Senarath Yapa, the SLAVF Commandant who is instrumental in initiating this programme, kicked off the drive by planting the first ‘Mee’ sapling in the compound by symbolizing the programme at the auspicious minute.

Professor Nimal De Silva and Professor M S Manawadu, experts in architectural field and environmental field, environmentalists, Mr. Channa Ekanayaka and Mr. Devana Salgado arrived at the premises at the invitation of the Commandant, SLAVF for inauguration.

Those experts closely inspected the camp land site and screened the most suited places for planting of rare species and saplings, meant to restore the eco-system and natural water bodies with the aim of giving a new lease of life to the already dried stream that flowed through the camp premises in the past.

Brigadier Ranjan Jayasekara, Director, Directorate of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, Brigadier Palitha Godellawatta, Principal Staff Officer, All Branch Heads and Other Ranks of the SLAVF attended the inaugural programme.
