“We must always remember that government employees are paid with public money. So we are bound to give the maximum service to people. As you are going to be administrative officials in the country, you must be mindful of your responsibilities towards people. I would like to remind you of the advice recently given by His Excellency the President to public servants. His Excellency highlighted three points to think about. They are punctuality, commitment and reducing power distance,” so said Commander, Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe addressing the latest batch of Sri Lanka Administrative Service (SLAS) Cadets who began their District Training in Jaffna as a supplement to the whole training programme.
Major General Hathurusinghe, attending the preliminary session of the workshop on Monday (04) at the invitation of the District Secretary, Jaffna Mrs Emelda Sukumar further added that in order to make the administrative machinery more efficient and effective, a change of attitude is a must. Major General Hathurusinghe, commenting further said that such training will help enhance their knowledge, skills and attitude to discharge a better service to the country and its citizens. He reminded them of some eminent administrative officials who rendered a yeoman service to the country and urged the new batch of 145 SLAS Cadets to follow them as role models.
It is customary for SLAS Cadets to obtain their District Training at various District Secretariats around the island. However, as a result of discussions Mrs Emelda Sukumar has had with the Civil Administrative authorities in Colombo, all members of this batch were awarded this year’s training in the Jaffna district for the first time.
It is believed an opportunity received to serve Jaffna will enhance the Cadets’ knowledge on Tamil language, Hindu culture and the lifestyle in Jaffna. The period they are assigned to be in Jaffna is significant because Jaffna will have its local government election on 23rd instant and they will be able to experience what responsibilities an administrative officer has to bear during an election period, the Commander opined.
Governor Northern Province Major General (Retd) G.A. Chandrasiri and a few senior administrative officials from Colombo and Jaffna addressed the gathering.
