Signallers Mark Their 73rd Anniversary at Panagoda

The new shrine room of the Buddha (Budu Medura) and the Bo Maluwa (Bodhi precincts), erected inside the Regimental Headquarters of Sri Lanka Signal Corps (SLSC) at Panagoda was ceremonially opened for veneration on Saturday (15) early morning (full moon day) at the auspicious 5.56 minute to coincide with the forthcoming 73rd anniversary of the SLSC on Wednesday (19).

Major General K.R.P Rowel, Colonel Commandant, SLSC Regiment as the Chief Guest for the occasion unveiled a plaque and opened it for offerings, amid religious observances, performed by members of the Maha Sangha present at the occasion on Poya Day (15).

Designed by the reputed architect, Mr Denis Fernando in close consultation with the Colonel Commandant, the construction of the sacred place was completed through the voluntary contribution of labour and expertise of both SLSC officers and other rankers. Similarly, outside devotees too supported the project in some ways. Earlier, the SLSC shrine was not in proper order and necessitated complete renovation after expanding the Bo Maluwa.

The same evening (15), an overnight Pirith chanting ceremony to bless the Regiment got underway with the participation of several leading Buddhist monks.

Mrs Ramya Kumari Rowel, Chairperson, SLSC Seva Vanitha Unit, Major General B.H.M.A Wijesinghe, senior officers and a gathering of family members of deceased Signallers, serving officers and other rankers, disabled all rankers and well-wishers were present at the Pirith chanting ceremony.

Monks for the chanting were conducted in a colourful procession, comprised of flag-bearers, Ves dancers, low-country dancers and drummers, preceded by carrying of the sacred relic casket and the Piruwana Poth Wahanse (Pali canon). SLSC Colonel Commandant carried the relic casket and formally invited the monks to commence chanting after offer of the traditional Deheth Wattiya (tray of betel). The occasion also transferred merits on all fallen SLSC War Heroes.

Heel Daana (breakfast) to the monks who chanted overnight and offer of alms to 25 Buddhist monks (Sangika Daana) the same afternoon (16) culminated the religious programmes, related to the commemoration of the anniversary.

Later on, SLSC Seva Vanitha Unit members, led by its Chairperson, distributed special gift parcels among family members of fallen SLSC War Heroes who were attending the commemorative ceremonies.
