Serving Disable War Heroes Further Supported; More Funds Donated to SVAB Coffers

Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) at Army Headquarters, giving further boost to the morale of differently-able War Heroes, extended its helping hand once again under thematic ‘Agayamu Obe Kaya Daanaya’ (your sacrifice of legs & limbs valued) project to another batch on Friday (24) by way of distributing most necessary medical equipment and other accessories among those War Heroes still in service.

Financial grants, electric and manual wheelchairs, artificial limbs, bathroom fittings, sanitary-ware, sophisticated medical equipment,  hearing aids, spectacles, catheters, walking aids, electric appliances, school essentials for War Hero children, etc were among many forms of assistance, thus offered to a group of 150 more serving disable soldiers during a ceremony that got underway at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute. The total value of those donations exceeds Rs 4 million.

Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army as the Chief Guest graced the donation ceremony.

Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake, President, SVAB, who was actively instrumental in getting the whole project organized, together with Mrs Nayana De Silva, SVAB Vice President, Mrs Sandamali Abeysekara, Secretary, SVAB, members of the SVAB executive committee and a large gathering, took part in the day’s event.

Major General Crishantha De Silva, Chief of Staff, Major General S.A.P.P Samarasinghe, Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Adjutant General, Major General E.M.M Ambanpola, Colonel of the Engineer Regiment, Major General E.K.J.K Wijesiri, Provost Marshal, Major General Amal Karunasekara, Military Secretary and a host of officers and other ranks, witnessed the day’s distribution ceremony.    

Lighting of the traditional oil lamp, observance of one-minute silence in honour of fallen War Heroes, recital of the SVAB theme song and the welcome address followed the distribution of those essentials to disable War Heroes under five phases.

Before the day’s Chief Guest, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake joined distribution of those gifts, Major General S.A.P.P Samarasinghe, Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, Major General E.P De Z Abeysekara, Deputy Chief of Staff and Major General Crishantha De Silva, Chief of Staff, gave away those gestures of assistance in succession.

Afterwards the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, showing fatherly warmth and affection, began giving away those supporting equipment to a section of those War Heroes in the company of Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake, President, SVAB.  Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake simultaneously shared a word or two with those recipients before receipt of those accessories.  

On the same occasion, the Army Chief gave away an LCD television set (Rs 2.5 lakhs) and an automatic scooter for the use of disable War Heroes to the Director General Rehabilitation, Major General A.M Perera.

Adding phenomenal significance to the objective of the entire SVAB’s welfare project for disable War Heroes and its proposed construction of a Reception Hall, Sri Lanka Light Infantry Seva Vanitha Unit, Sri Lanka Armoured Corps Seva Vanitha Unit, Sri Lanka Engineers Regiment Seva Vanitha Unit, Sri Lanka Army Service Corps Seva Vanitha Unit and Mechanized Infantry Regiment Seva Vanitha Unit towards the end of the day’s event, expressed their solidarity and fellowship with the SVAB and separately donated to the coffers of the SVAB. A total of Rs 15.5 million was thus donated to the SVAB on the occasion. Of them, Rs 3.5 million donated by the Sri Lanka Army Service Corps Seva Vanitha Unit was for construction of a Cottage in the ongoing Abimansala - 3 construction at Pangolla, Kurunegala under the SVAB’s ‘Brave Hearts’ project.

Senior officers representing the Regiment, together with their spouses who are also the chairpersons of respective Seva Vanitha Units, presented those symbolic cheques to the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake.  
    
A few colourful cultural feats and melodies, aired by renowned artistes and Ranaviru Real Stars, added entertainment to the day’s programme.
