Sergeant Bandara takes leave amidst tears of loved ones

The funeral of Tamil Tiger slain Sergeant P.R.R.P Bandara (34) of the 12th Regiment of Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA) took place with full military honour & at the cemetery of in his native village, Kuratihena, Hettipola in the Kurunegala District.

A large crowd gathered to pay their last respects to this young warrior who was slain by Tamil Tigers whilst on duty at a picket point in Chenkalady, Batticaloa on 05 september 2005.

Sergeant Bandara born on 24 May 1970 at Narammala in Kurunegala District received his basic education from Ku/Wa/Hettipola Maha Vidyalaya before he joined the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force on 16 February 1990 to serve the country at the height of the war.

On completion of his basic military training course at the Army Training School in Nikaweratiya, Sergeant Bandara was posted to the 12 SLA.

The Army conferred 50th Independence Anniversary Commemoration Medal, Army 50th Anniversary Medal, North and East Operations Medal, Purnabhumi Medal and Riviresa Campaign Service Medal on him in recognition of his dedicated services in the North & East in safeguarding the territorial integrity of the motherland.

During his 15 year service in the Army, he had enhanced his military knowledge following training courses such as Leadership Course for Non Commissioned Officers, Junior Leader's Course and Basic Artillery Course conducted by Sri Lanka Army.

Sergeant PRRP Bandara of Hankolewatta, Kuratihane , Hettipola was married to A A Nalika Chandani Athauda and a father of two, a son R.P. Nirmal Ramesh Bandara (08) and a daughter P.R. Sachini S Bandara (03).

He was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant.
