Secy Defence &;amp; Commander Participate in 'International Institute for Strategic Studies Asia Security Summit'

The ‘12th International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Asia Security Summit - The Shangri-La Dialogue’ that discussed a wide range of regional, global, strategic, technological, defensive and security-related issues, took place recently (May 31 - June 2) at the Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore.

Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence and Urban Development and Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army represented Sri Lanka during the sessions that drew about 300 representatives from many corners of the world. Mr Nguyen Tan Dung, Prime Minister of Vietnam delivered the keynote address during the opening session.

The broad spectrum of topical issues taken up for discussion during the IISS Security Summit - The Shangri-La Dialogue sessions, included ‘The US Approach to Regional Security’, ‘Defending National Interests; Preventing Conflict’, ‘Military Modernisation and Strategic Transparency’, ‘Avoiding Incidents at Sea’, ‘The Afghan Drawdown and Regional Security’, ‘Missile Defence in the Asia-Pacific’, ‘New Military Technologies and Doctrines’, ‘Defence Diplomacy and Conflict Prevention’, ‘The Cyber Dimension to Asian Security’, ‘China’s Role in Global Security’, ‘Global and Regional Institutions and Asian Security’ and ‘Advancing Defence Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific’.

Mr Rajapaksa on the sidelines of main sessions had the rare chance of having bilateral meetings with several delegates who were keen on learning more about Sri Lanka’s post-war security issues and overall defence management. Exchange of mementos too occurred towards the end of those meetings as gestures of goodwill and remembrance.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya also met a couple of representatives during those two days and shared a couple of views with them on matters of importance to them.
