The Security Force HQ - Wanni (SFHQ-Wanni), intended to have the second ‘coconut triangle’ in the North initiated a mega project to cultivate 100,000 coconut saplings in the Wanni region in collaboration with the ‘Derana’ media network, Coconut Development Board and Tropicoir Lanka (Pvt) Ltd on Thursday (12 Oct) at Pampeimadu, Vavuniya.
The project covers Anuradhapura, Vavuniya and Mannar districts and the initial distribution of 11,500 coconut saplings among local civilians took place at Pampeimadu in the presence of a gathering of Senior Officers, including Major General W.P.A.D.W Nanayakkara RSP VSV USP ndu, Commander, SF-Wanni and representatives of those supporting and donor agencies.
The project also coincided with the 74th Army Anniversary. A special lecture on the value of coconut trees was also delivered on the same occasion by officials of the Tropicoir Lanka Pvt Ltd. The distribution ceremony was organized by the troops of the 562 Infantry Brigade as per guidelines given by Brigadier T.M.S.J Thennakoon RSP, Commander, 562 Infantry Brigade on the instructions of Major General H.G.P.M Kariyawasam RSP ndu psc IG, General Officer Commanding, 56 Infantry Division.
The project will be accordingly joined by all Divisions and Brigades covering Mannar, Vavuniya and Anuradhapura Districts. The 21 Infantry Division will cover the Anuradhapura district while 54 Infantry Division and 56 Infantry Division will cover the Mannar and Vavuniya districts respectively.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by the Commander, SF-Wanni as the Chief Guest, together with Mr P.A Sarathchandra, District Secretary of Vavuniya. Major General A.K Rajapaksa RSP, Commander, Forward Maintenance Area - North Central, General Officers Commanding, Brigade Commanders, Commanding Officers, Senior Officers, Officers, Mr Tharindu Dunuwila, Director of Tropicoir Lanka Pvt Ltd, Mr Dhanawala Withana, Manager of the People's Bank, Anuradhapura, Mr H.M Harshana Chaturanga, Deputy Manager of ‘Manusath Derana’, Other Ranks and a large crowd of civilians joined the distribution ceremony at Pampemadu, Vavuniya.
The first ‘Coconut Triangle’ in the North was initiated earlier in Mullaittivu and the Wanni region one will be the second in the North.
