Secretary Defence, Top Brass Security & State Officials Inspect Deegawapiya Stupa Restoration Project

Defence Secretary Gen (Retd) Kamal Gunaratne, together with the Secretary to Public Security Ministry, Major General (Retd) Jagath Alwis, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army, General Shavendra Silva, District Secretary for Ampara, D.M.L. Bandaranayaka, Chief of National Intelligence Major General (Retd) Ruwan Kulathunga, Director General Civil Security Department Major General Nandana Senadeera, Director General of Archaeology, Prof Anura Manatunga, Military Liaison Officer of Ministry of Defence Brigadier Dinesh Nanayakkara, Director Military Intelligence Brigadier Robin Jayasuriya, Architects, Archaeologists, Engineers and Surveyors on Tuesday 26) made an inspection visit to the Deegawapiya Stupa restoration project.

The restoration of the stupa needs 30,000 tailor-made standard bricks on a daily basis and technical skills of Army soldiers and Civil Security Department (CSD) are to be used for the purpose of producing bricks, the Secretary Defence was quoted saying. "While restoring the Stupa to match with its past grandeur and glory, devotees wishing to contribute to the Stupa restoration are also invited to give a hand to the noble cause”, he said. The project is to be completed in three years and transparency of the donations to the bank account would be strictly followed" he has gone on record saying so. He also had a lengthy discussion with the incumbent and members of the Maha Sangha in relation to the restoration process and other peripheral matters.

Members of the Maha Sangha including the Chief Incumbent at Deegawapiya Temple Ven.
