The Secretary Defence Joins His Former Regiment During the 66th Anniversary Celebrations of Sri Lanka Signals Corps

THE SECRETARY OF DEFENCE, Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa graced the final grandeur of the Corps of Signals’ 66th Anniversary Celebrations when he was felicitated as the Chief Guest during the Signal Officers’ Get-together on 21 November 2009. The occasion turned out to be an ideal reunion for the Secretary of Defence with his former Regiment since he commenced his military career as a Second Lieutenant of the Sri Lanka Signals Corps on 25 May 1972.

Signallers were proud and honoured to have Commander of the Army, Lt General Jagath Jayasuriya and Chief of Staff, Major General Mendaka Samarasinghe also joining them as Guests of Honour during the occasion.

In his key note speech, the Secretary of Defence acknowledged the crucial role played by Signallers during 30 years of combating terrorism; especially in the last 4 years. Further, he paid tribute and valued his young officer days’ seniors in the Signals, who instilled in him certain personal qualities such as integrity and teamwork that he believes to have positively influenced his military career and civilian life too. He also assured the continued State involvement in rehabilitation of service personnel wounded in action and the welfare of family members of the fallen heroes and the serving military personnel.
 
Sri Lanka Signals Corps unveiled her 66 years of glory in the backdrop of historic victory over terrorism when the rank and file joined in a series of events from 19th to 21st November 2009. The Corps organized religious activities, a Remembrance Ceremony to tribute Officers and Other Ranks, who made the ultimate sacrifice during the course of liberating Sri Lanka from the clutches of evil terrorism, a Special Reception to congregate and honour family members of the fallen heroes, a Ceremonial Parade, an All Ranks Lunch, and a Formal Dinner Night at the Officers’ Mess during the period of celebrations.

The Corps of Signals spent the last 66 years with significant achievements in the fields of military communications, land operations of all magnitudes, peace support operations in Haiti, Disaster Management, and other activities such as sports and entertainment. The Corps of Signals is presently contributing to the Army’s efforts in ongoing stability and reconstruction operations.
