Secretary Defence Addresses Army Brigade Commanders

Major General (Retd) Kamal Gunaratne, Secretary Defence this morning (25) adding his input to the ongoing three-day workshop for Brigade Commanders under the ‘Formulation of Way Forward Strategy for Sri Lanka Army 2020 - 2025’ theme at the Army HQ, spelt out what the Ministry of Defence (MoD) expects from Senior Commanding Officers in relation to the sphere of national security in the country and possibilities for improvement in different security aspects.

A gathering of Brigade Commanders are currently attending the above-mentioned workshop, initiated on a concept of the Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva who himself was associated with today’s meeting at the Ministry of Defence. The workshop kicked off on Wednesday (24) at the Army Headquarters after the opening address made by the Army Chief.

Major General (Retd) Kamal Gunaratne also expressed his appreciation to the Commander of the Army for his tireless roles in the prevention of COVID-19 epidemic in the country and the contribution of tri services at the outset. During his address, Major General (Retd) Gunaratne briefed the attendees on the status quo in relation to national security concerns and underlined the need to take all possible precautionary actions against untoward incidents in close coordination with law-enforcement authorities.

Recollecting his own experiences as a senior ground commander, he highlighted the importance of their duties at every level in the best interests of the country’s national security and maintenance of law and order. Performance of your dedicated duties in the most fruitful manner would usher in a better conducive environment where troops under command to you would also be able to follow your guidance with confidence. Ministry of Defence would always stand by you as long as you do the right thing and take the correct decision, the Secretary Defence emphasized.

The acting IGP, Mr C.D. Wickramaratne attending the meeting urged those senior ground commanders to closely liaise with STF and Police personnel in respective areas in order to maintain security, peace and harmony.
