Second Phase of the 52 Division House Construction Project Commenced

The Colombo-based Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), HABITAT extending its support to the Army’s ongoing house construction project for the resettled in the North, has come forward once again as it did during the tsunami catastrophe.

Mr Tony Seneviratne, Director, HABITAT following discussions he has had with the General Officer Commanding in the 52 Division in Varani has agreed to provide building materials for construction of 50 new houses under the second phase of the house construction programme in Tennamarachchi and Vadamarachchi divisional secretariats. The Army is to provide technical expertise and labour for the construction.

Inauguration of the construction of the first 10 houses got off the ground recently after a brief ceremony, attended by the 52 Division General Officer Commanding and a few senior officers.

During the first phase of the housing programme, 52 Division troops on the instructions of the Commander of the Army and the Commander, Security Forces, Jaffna constructed 152 houses in the peninsula in the past year.
