Saliyapura Gajaba Regiment Welfare Complex Offers Services to Travellers on A-9

A Mega holiday bungalow and a welfare complex, dedicated to the services of Saliyapura Gajaba Regiment (GR) War Heroes were declared open on Monday (01) by Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary to Ministry of Defence and Urban Development in the company of General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army.

These two places of vital importance came about in line with the government priotifozed welfare programmes on behalf of war heroes serving every corner of the island.

Mr Rajapaksa, who has been exceptionally concerned about the project, directed all tri-service field formations to go for construction of permanent billets and other buildings.

The project at Saliyapura cost the Army about Rs. 34 million upon completion.

Mr Rajapaksa, himself a veteran of the Gajaba Regiment, was very much impressed with the progress of Saliyapura GR Headquarters with most vital amenities now intact.

The brief ceremony saw Mr Rajapaksa after cutting the ribbon warmed both buildings in accordance with traditional rights and rituals such as recital of Seth Pirith, milk pot boiling, lighting of the oil lamp etc, inaugurating the project which can accommodate more than 100 soldiers or civilians at one given time.

The welfare complex erected bordering the A-9 highway (Kandy- Jaffna) is comprised of several sales outlets open to both Army personnel and the public alike.

Built jointly with the support of Engineer Services Regiment (ESR) and GR troops, the whole project was initiated by Major General Jagath Dias, Colonel of the Regiment GR, and closely supervised by Colonel Lama Hewage, Centre Commandant GR at Saliyapura, with the assistance of civil sector technical expertise.

A large gathering of senior officers and invitees wieve present at the occasion.
