Sacred Relics for 'Sanda Hiru Seya' Taken in Procession to Defence Ministry Before Airlifting


Sacred relics of the Buddha, expected to be placed in the War Hero-dedicated ‘Sanda Hiru Seya’, the Stupa (Pagoda), now under construction at Anuradhapura, as a novel concept of Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence and Urban Development, were respectfully taken to the Ministry of Defence Saturday (22) morning from Hunupitiya Gangaramaya to be flown to Anuradhapura on account of Poson Full Moon Poya Day (23).

Those relics including the Buddha’s Hair and Skeletal Relics are to be placed in the ‘Sanda Hiru Seya’ construction now reaching the second boundary layer (Pesa Walalla) after exhibition at Anuradhapura Dagoba premises for four days (June 22-26) for public veneration.

On Sunday (23), President Mahinda Rajapaksa, together with Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa is to place these relics in the structure, amidst a large gathering of devotees and religious rites and rituals.

The ‘Sanda Hiru Seya’, only second to the Ruwanweli Maha Seya in size and extent is about 40-50 ft deep below the ground level and needs more than 30 million bricks, 130,000 cement bags, 9.5 million kgs of lime, 70,000 of granite cubes according to the estimates.

Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa carried the sacred relics casket from temple to the Defence Ministry premises for veneration before it is flown to Anuradhapura, Saturday (22).
