A high-level Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) delegation, led by HE Mr Yuri Borisovich Matter, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Sri Lanka and the Republic of Maldives called on the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake this morning (27) at the Army Headquarters and pledged their technical assistance for refurbishment and repair of the existing fleet among armed forces of Sri Lanka.
The five-member delegation during the meeting with the Commander of the Army Wednesday (27) morning expressed their readiness to provide assistance to improve technical knowhow and develop capabilities as regards refurbishment and repair of the existing fleet here in Sri Lanka. The focus was much on armoured and other heavy vehicles of the Sri Lanka Armoured Corps, Mechanized Infantry Regiment and Directorate of Electrical & Mechanical Engineering of the Army.
Russian delegates at the same time invited the Sri Lanka Army to participate in different military competitions in Russia, generally held covering spheres, like tanks, firing, driving, racing, etc, for which the Commander of the Army thanked the Russian delegation.
Lieutenant General Senanayake during the meet gratefully recalled gestures of cooperation the Russian Federation extended to the Army in the past in its fight against brutal LTTE terrorism before May 2009 and its sustained technical support to enhance capacity-building in the Army. In particular, he also expressed his gratitude to HE the Russian Ambassador, accompanying the delegation for his visit to the Army Headquarters.
The Russian delegation of the Ministry of Defence included Major General Alexander Zinchenko, Colonel Sergei Urchenko, Lieutenant Colonel Roman Pobrus, Mr Victor Petrov and Mr Roman Chepurnov in addition to the Russian Ambassador in Colombo, Defence Attaché and the Assistant Defence Attaché in the Embassy in Colombo.
Brigadier Duminda Gamage, Director Plans of the Army was also associated with the meeting. Major General Ajith Wijesinghe, Military Secretary welcomed the visiting Ambassador and the delegation to the Commander’s Secretariat.
