Roles of Civil Staff Members Who Stood Behind North-East Humanitarian Operations Recognized in Medal Awarding Ceremony

Contribution of four thousand and eighty-eight (4088) members of the civil staff in the Army who stood behind the Army’s unrelenting pursuit of humanitarian operations were recognized after symbolically awarding the North-East Medal to a representative group of 100 during a special ceremony at Army Headquarters Friday (2) morning.

The special award ceremony that recognizes diverse roles of dedication and commitment, played by the civil staff during the War was graced by Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army as the Chief Guest who also has served as the Wanni Commander at the height of the successfully-concluded Humanitarian Operations.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces inaugurated the award of the 'North-East Humanitarian Operation Medal' on 14th December 2010 as a gesture of recognition of the roles of both War Heroes and members of the Army civil staff.   

The day's ceremony commenced soon after the arrival of the Chief Guest at the venue. He was conducted to the main stage in a colourful cultural pageant, comprised of dancing troupes. Recital of the Army song and the observance of a two-minute silence followed the formal proclamation on the day's event and citations, attributed to award of those honouring Medals.

The next stage of the proceedings was momentous. Amidst sentimental melodies that resonated rhythms of patriotism, the occasion turned more dignified and called upon the first representative segment of senior members to receive their 'North-East Humanitarian Operation Medal' from the chief guest, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army. The first batch of Medal recipients included senior civil staff members who served the North and East.

After the Chief Guest pinned the first medal, Chief of Staff and Deputy Chief of Staff followed suit.

Remaining 3988 members of the civil staff were to receive their honours from Commanders of Wanni, Jaffna and East, Security Forces Headquarters  

The day's ceremonies wound up as everybody stood up singing the National anthem as a mark of respect to the motherland.

Mr Gamini Mahagamage, Director, Civil Affairs, Mr Ananda Hettiarachchi, Chief Accountant, Senior officers and a gathering of invitees attended the ceremony.
