Retiring SLAOC Senior Officer’s Service to the Army Praised

Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage, Commander of the Army took time off on Thursday (10) to extend his best wishes to one more Senior Officer of the Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps (SLAOC) on the eve of his retirement from the Army.

Major General G.K.I. Vithanachchi ato, Director General Ordnance Services after an illustrious service of more than three decades was invited to the office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage, together with his family members, just a few days before his retirement.

Having served the Army for more than 33 years in an exemplary manner, Major General G.K.I. Vithanachchi ato, during the meet received appreciative compliments and best wishes from the Army Chief who also commended his working capacity, commitment and dedication to the Army as a prominent Logistic Officer.

He also refreshed memories of the retiree’s contribution and valuable roles during the height of the war against terrorism as a Logistic Officer of the highest caliber before May 2009.

The Army Chief while sharing a few pleasantries with the retiring Major General and the latter’s family members also inquired into the retiring Senior Officer's future endeavors and plans and wished him good luck. He also did not mince words to praise the support that his family members has given throughout for performance of retiring Senior Officer’s duty roles away from home.

Major General G.K.I. Vithanachchi ato also in turn thanked the Commander of the Army for his wishes and guidance while mentioning the encouragement he received in the performance of his duties.

Towards the end of the interaction, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage awarded a special memento to the outgoing Major General G.K.I. Vithanachchi ato as a symbol of appreciation and commendation, along with a special gift to the family.

Major General G.K.I. Vithanachchi enlisted in the Sri Lanka Army on 14 July 1987. Upon successful completion of basic military training in the Sri Lanka Military Academy under the Intake 32, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps. He was promoted to the rank of Major General on 03 August 2022.

He was holding the appointment of Director General Ordnance at the time of his retirement. He also held several key appointments in the organization such as Platoon Commander, Officer Commanding, Adjutant, Senior Stock Control Officer, Staff Officer - I, Directorate of Ordnance, Commanding Officer, Commandant Central Arms and Ammunitions Depot, Brigadier Administration and Quartering - Security Force Headquarters (Central).
