Retiring Senior Logistic Officer’s Service Lauded

Major General M.E.P Weerasinghe VSV USP ato, Colonel Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps (SLAOC) and Commander, Forward Maintenance Area - North Central, few days before his retirement from the Army, having served for more than 34 years, was invited to the office of the Commander of the Army, together with his family members on Friday (02) afternoon.

Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, Commander of the Army during the meeting with the retiring Senior Officer recalled noteworthy milestones during the latter’s admirable career as an experienced Officer in the SLAOC. The Army Chief praised him for his dedicated service and performance of diverse responsibilities with unfailing commitment and selflessness.

Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage similarly refreshed memories of the retiree’s contribution and valuable roles during the height of the war against terrorism as a Logistic Officer of the highest calibre before May 2009 and shared few reminiscences with the day's invitee.

Major General M.E.P Weerasinghe VSV USP ato also gratefully acknowledged the able guidance, lent to him all the time by the Commander in the performance of his office as the Colonel Commandant of the SLAOC and Commander, Forward Maintenance Area - North Central and several other diverse capacities.

The Army Chief while sharing a few pleasantries with his children, present at the occasion also inquired about the retiring Senior Officer’s future endeavours and plans.

Towards the end of the interaction, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage awarded a special memento to the retiring Senior Officer as a symbol of appreciation and commendation along with special gifts to his children.

Major General M.E.P Weerasinghe VSV USP ato enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet on 06 October 1988. Upon successful completion of the military training in Intake VI at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University and the Sri Lanka Military Academy, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps on 05 October 1990. After being steadily elevated to subsequent ranks in the course of the span of service in the Army, he was promoted to the rank of Major General on 14 September 2021.

He has been holding the appointments of the Colonel Commandant of SLAOC and Commander, Forward Maintenance Area - North Central at the time of his retirement. He also held the appointments of Platoon Commander of the Internal Security Platoon of Headquarters 211 Infantry Brigade, Officer Commanding of Forward Ordnance Depot - Kandy, Second-in-Command of Advanced Base Ordnance Depot - Minneriya, Officer Commanding of Forward Ordnance Depot - Batticaloa. Adjutant of 1 SLAOC, Senior Ordnance Officer of Headquarters 55 Infantry Division, Staff Officer 2 (Port Section) of Directorate of Ordnance Services - Army Headquarters, Staff Officer 2 (Overseas Indent Branch) of Directorate of Ordnance Services - Army Headquarters, Staff Officer 2 of Regimental Centre SLAOC, Logistics Officer of Sri Lanka Battalion in United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), Officer Commanding of Receipt Bay - 1 SLAOC, Second-in-Command of 3 SLAOC, Staff Officer 1 (Administration and Quartering) of 61 Infantry Division, Commanding Officer of 5 SLAOC, Staff Officer 1 (Provision, Procurement and Progress Branch) of Directorate of Ordnance Services - Army Headquarters, Colonel Administration and Quartering of Headquarters 59 Infantry Division, Colonel Administration and Quartering of Security Force Headquarters (Jaffna), Director of Procurement of Defence Headquarters, Commandant of Central Arms and Ammunition Depot, Brigadier Administration and Quartering of Security Force Headquarters (East), Director of Directorate of Ordnance Services - Army Headquarters, Chairman of Sri Lanka Army Judo Committee and Director General of Directorate of Ordnance Services - Army Headquarters.

Major General M.E.P Weerasinghe VSV USP ato, followed many local and foreign courses during his military career, such as the Platoon Commanders’ Tactics Course, Battalion Support Weapon Course, Officers’ Par Excellence Course, Basic Ordnance Management Course - India, Unit Fire Officers’ Course - Pakistan, Ammunition Technical Officers’ Course - Pakistan, Senior Management Officers’ Course - India, United Nation Logistic Officers’ Course - Nepal and Higher Ordnance Management Course - India.

He has also read for degrees, such as the Masters of Arts at the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka and the Executive Master of Science Degree in Supply Chain Management at Asia E University, Malaysia.
