Retiring MIR Senior Officer’s Service Commended

The retiring Major General S.J Priyadarshana RWP RSP USP of the Mechanized Infantry Regiment (MIR), the General Officer Commanding of the 66 Division on invitation arrived at the office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage on Friday (Dec 02), together with his family members.

After completing more than 33 years of admirable service in the Army, the Senior Officer on the verge of retirement received sincere compliments and best wishes from the Army Chief during the brief meeting. The Commander of the Army commended his dedicated services and appreciated his commitment to the organization, recalling a couple of memorable instances during combat operations.

The Army Chief also praised him for his services to the MIR Regimental Centre during his tenure as well as his contribution to the improvement of the infrastructure at the MIR Regimental Centre. He also inquired into the retiree’s future prospects and endeavours during the cordial meeting.

During the brief meeting, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage did not forget to speak and commend the family members present at the occasion.

Major General S.J Priyadarshana RWP RSP USP thanked the Commander of the Army for his guidance and encouragement in the performance of his duties and extended his greetings, too.

Towards the culmination of the interaction, the Army Chief awarded a special memento to outgoing Major General S.J Priyadarshana RWP RSP USP as a symbol of appreciation and commendation, along with a special gift to the family.

Major General S.J Priyadarshana RWP RSP USP enlisted to the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet on 20 January 1989. Upon successful completion of his military training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Gajaba Regiment on 19 January 1991 and was posted to the Mechanized Infantry Regiment on 04 February 2007 to coincide with the MIR’s raising. After being elevated to subsequent ranks in the course of his service in the Army, he was promoted to the rank of Major General on 10 October 2022.

During his tenure, he has served in responsible appointments as Platoon Commander, Officer Commanding, General Staff Officer 2, United Nations Military Observer in the United Nations Mission in Sudan, Second in Command, 4 Gajaba Regiment, Commanding Officer of 2 MIR and 4 MIR, Sector Commander, Sector 1, 14 Infantry Division, Colonel (General Staff), Headquarters, 14, 23 and 54 Infantry Divisions, Colonel (General Staff), Security Forces Headquarters (Wanni), Brigade Commander, 653 Infantry Brigade, Centre Commandant, Regimental Centre, Mechanized Infantry, Commander Mechanized Infantry Brigade, Director, Assets Management, Army Headquarters and General Officer Commanding, 66 Infantry Division.

During his career, he has undergone several local courses such as Battalion Support Weapons Officers’ Course at Infantry Training Centre - Minneriya, Platoon Commander Course at Infantry Training Centre - Minneriya, Battalion Training Instructor Course and Observation Post Course at Army Training School - Maduru Oya. Moreover, he has followed overseas courses, inclusive of the Young Officer’s Course, Pakistan, United Nations Protection of Civilians Course (UNPOCC) in Malaysia and the Senior Command Course in India.

The Senior Officer has also been decorated with Rana Wickrama Padakkama (RWP) and Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP) for his heroic commitment against terrorism before May 2009.
