Retiring Major General G.A Munasinghe’s Service Praised

Major General G.A. Munasinghe RSP ato, Director General Ordnance Service and Colonel Commandant of Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps called at the Commander’s office on request on Thursday (26 Oct) along with family members on the eve of his retirement from the Army.

The Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu during interactions with the retiring Senior Officer with more than 33 years of service, commended him for his untiring commitments, filled with cherished memories and noteworthy achievements. The Commander of the Army also spoke high of his skills and efforts he made to improve different technical aspects and peripheral practical needs of the organization as a Logistic Officer.

Major General G.A. Munasinghe RSP ato in return thanked the Army Commander for the cordial invitation and expressed his gratitude for the guidance the Commander has extended to him in the performance of his varied duties in the Army.

The Army Chief while sharing a few pleasantries with his family members invited to the occasion, also queried the retiring Senior Officer’s future undertakings and plans. The Army Chief simultaneously appreciated the invaluable support that has been given to the Senior Officer by his family members throughout his career.

Towards the end of the interactions, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage awarded a special memento to the retiring Senior Officer as a symbol of appreciation and commendation, along with a special gift to the family.

Here follows a brief profile of the retiring Senior Officer;

Major General G.A. Munasinghe RSP ato enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet on 14 November 1989 and underwent basic military training at the Kothalawala Defece Academy and Sri Lanka Military Academy - Diyatalawa in Intake 34B. He was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps on 14 November 1991. After being steadily elevated to subsequent ranks in the course of the span of service in the Army, he was promoted to the rank of Major General on 19 August 2023.

He has been holding the offices of Master General Ordnance, Army Headquarters and Colonel Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps at the time of his retirement. He also held the appointments of Platoon Commander of Internal Security Platoon - 9th Infantry Brigade, Officer Commanding of Forward Ordnance Depot - Trincomalee, Officer Commanding, Forward Ordnance Depot at 51 Infantry Division, General Staff Officer 2 of Directorate of Plans, Army Headquarters, Staff Officer 3 of Master General Ordnance Branch - Army Headquarters, Staff Officer 2 (Logistics) of Security Force Headquarters (Wanni), Ammunition Technical Officer and Ordnance Officer in Sri Lanka Battalion United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), Officiating Staff Officer 1 (Logistics) of Security Force Headquarters (Jaffna), Commandant of School of Ordnance, Commanding Officer of 3 Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps, Sector Commander of Sector 19, Colonel (Administration and Quartering), of Headquarters 54 Infantry Division, Head of Procurement at Defence Headquarters Complex - Akuregoda, Commandant of Base Ordnance Depot- Ragama, Centre Commandant of Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps and Director - Directorate of Ordnance Services, Army Headquarters.

For his bravery and gallantry on the battlefields, he has been awarded the ‘Rana Sura Padakkama’.

Major General G.A. Munasinghe followed many local and foreign courses during his military career, including the Test Report Evaluation and Interpretation Course - Textile Laboratory of Sri Lanka Standards Institution, Training Session for Identification of Dangerous Goods Course - Sri Lanka Ports Authority, Young Officers’ Course- Pakistan, Mid-Career Course – Pakistan, Ammunition Technical Officers’ Course - Pakistan, Senior Management Officers’ Course- India, Higher Ordnance Management Course- India. In addition, the Senior Officer has read for a number of higher educational and non-military qualifications such as Bachelor of Arts (Defence Studies) Degree at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy, a Diplomacy and International Relations Course at the Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute.
