Yala National Park, one of the largest national forests in the country, spans over 130,000 hectares. It has two zones accessible to the public.
Due to unexpected heavy rainfall at the end of 2023, the Director General of Wildlife requested assistance from the Ministry of Defence to restore the road system in Yala Park. Accordingly, under the instructions of Commander of the Army, machinery and labour assistance from the Army provided for the task.
Under the guidance of Major General B.K.G.M.L Rodrigo RSP psc IG, Commander Security Forces - Central and under the supervision of Major General C.S Munasinghe WWV RWP RSP USP ndc psc IG, General Officer Commanding of 12 Infantry Division, the restoration work commenced on 05 January 2024 and concluded on 19 June 2024. The project undertaken by the Army was highly appreciated by wildlife authorities and hoteliers.
