Resettlement of Muslim Families in North at End of Ramazan Festival – Northern Governor

FOUR HUNDRED MUSLIM families will be shortly resettled in the Muslim village of the Salampaikulam in Pampaimadu, Vavuniya, Northern Province Governor Major General G. A. Chandrasiri says.

The Governor had given that assurance during a visit to the displaced persons in Salampaikualam village, the Governor’s Office said.

These villagers were chased away by the LTTE 20 years ago.

Major General Chandrasiri instructed State officials to help recommence cultivation in over 1,000 acres of paddy land which had been abandoned due to the terrorist activities. A ceremony will be held to inaugurate this cultivation programme under the aegis of Senior Presidential Advisor and MP Basil Rajapaksa who is also the Chairman of the ‘Uthuru Vasanthaya’ Task Force.

Farmers will be given a subsidy of Rs. 4,000 per acre, three bushels of seed paddy and fertilizer free of charge besides machinery supplied by the Government. 

The Governor requested all state officials to seek the assistance of the security forces to ensure that all villages are mine free.

The Muslim families are expected to be resettled after the Ramazan Festival.

Brigadier Priyantha Napagoda, SLFP Chief Organizer in Vavuniya Pramarathna Sumathipala, Vavuniya DIG and several State officials accompanied the Governor on his visit.
