Religious Blessings to Mark Commander’s First Year in Office

Today (1st June 2023) marks the completion of the first year of office of the incumbent 24th Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu whose command and leadership has made significant and progressive contribution to the growth of the Sri Lanka Army while making great strides in many a sphere, like nation building and community oriented projects, enhancing measures for soldiers welfare, resource and financial management strategies, restructuring of Army formations and so on, to state just a few. In addition, Army Commander's vision has enabled the capacity building of the Army personnel to actively contribute for enhanced agriculture productivity and disaster and emergency management. Further, the measures have been taken for technological advancement of the Army by introducing many digital and updated software applications, thus driving the organization towards economical usage of resources.

The special importance of the day this morning (1) gave prominence to religious blessings and ‘Seth Pirith’ chanting at the Commander’s office where the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage, together with Mrs Janaki Liyanage, President of the Army Seva Vanitha Unit performed religious observances before members of the Maha Sangha, led by Ven Aluthnuwara Anuruddha Nayake Thera, Chief Incumbent at Kotte Raja Maha Viharaya invoked blessings chanting ‘Seth Pirith’ after a brief ‘Anushasana’ (oration) that highlighted the significance of the occasion. Offer of ‘Pirikara’ (donations) and ‘Gilanpasa’ (refreshments) to those monks brought the day’s religious programme to an end.

Adding further value and humane touch to the 1st anniversary day, the Commander of the Army with Mrs Janaki Liyanage then joined the distribution of 35 nutrient packs among pregnant women soldiers working at the Army HQ. Minutes after that, all of them were invited to a sumptuous lunch treat, arranged under the close supervision of Mrs Janaki Liyanage, President, Army Seva Vanitha Unit. The Army Chief took time off and shared a couple of thoughts with a cross section of those women soldiers and inquired about their well-being and family concerns.

The simple commemorative programmes were attended by Principal Staff Officers and Senior Officers.
