Regimental Boxers Show Colours in Tournament

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army, himself an international judge for boxing watched the final championship bout in the Inter Regiment Boxing Tournament, held at Panagoda Army Cantonment Physical Training School Friday (10) afternoon.

Organized by the Army Boxing Committee a total of 73 male boxers and 8 woman boxers from 17 regiments competed for supremacy in the tournament that got underway for five consecutive days.

Boxers from Sri Lanka Army Service Corps (SLASC) in the final encounter beat Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps (SLAOC) boxers and emerged victors.

73 male boxers competed under 10 weight categories and 8 female boxers fought under 4 weight categories, representing all 17 regiments during the tournament.

The Chief Guest on the occasion was received by Major General Crishantha De Silva, Commander, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, in the company of Brigadier W.G.L. Padmakumara, Chairman, Army Boxing Committee.

Gajaba Regiment, SLASC and SLAOC battled for final championship.

Private P.D.D Maduranga of SLAOC became the Best Boxer (Middle weight under 75 Kg) and Lance Corporal A.P.G Chandrakumara of SLASC was adjudged the Best Loser (Light weight under 81 Kg).
