Puthukkudiyiruppu Family, Latest Recipient of Army- Built New Home

Giving more teeth to the ongoing house construction projects of the Army for the benefit of the homeless in the North and East, 3 (V) Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) troops of the 682 Infantry Brigade and the 68 Infantry Division under Security Force HQ -Mullaitivu (SFHQ-MLT) built a new house to a needy family, residing in Puthukkudiyiruppu and formally handed it over to the beneficiaries during a brief ceremony on Monday (31 July).

A combined sponsorship of Rs 2 m, made available to the Army by Mr K Shantha and Mr M Suman from Manduwil, Mr S Punidawalan from Anandapuram and Mr M.B Anton residing at Valaimadam enabled the troops to build the new house using their technical expertise and manpower.

Mr Thyagarajah, a father of a 3-month old infant is without a permanent source of income and living with his family in a shelter covered with tin sheets. However, he had his own plot of land but was without money to build a house for themselves. Their plight was brought to the notice of the 68 Infantry Division troops by the Grama Niladhari in the area with the intention of seeking Army assistance for getting them a new house.

The project was initiated according to the guidelines of Major General M.K Jayawardena RSP VSV USP ndu, Commander, SF-MLT and Major General S Kasturimudali RSP ndc psc, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 68 Infantry Division. The Commander, 682 Infantry Brigade and Commanding Officer, 3 (V) VIR supervised the project.

The keys of the new house were symbolically handed over to the beneficiaries by the Commander, SF-MLT in the presence of the GOC, 68 Infantry Division. At the same warming ceremony, the day’s Chief Guest gifted a stock of essentials and household items to the deserving family as incentives.

The Commander, 682 Infantry Brigade, Commanding Officer, 3 (V) VIR, Senior Officers, Officers, Other Ranks, Sponsors, Government Officials in the area and a gathering of civilians were also present during the ceremony.
