Prosthetic Arm Offered to Manage Own Disable War Heroes

As the saying goes; ‘compassion knows no bounds,’ the Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) has taken another humane initiative by offering a Germany-manufactured prosthetic arm to one of the senior War Heroes, serving a similar set of disable War Heroes at Attidiya Mihindu Seth Medura.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army during a recent visit to the Mihindu Seth Medura casually  noticed the sanatorium’s Center Commandant, Lieutenant Colonel V.P Kariyawasam who sustained injuries during LTTE attacks at Pooneryn in November 1993, was using a very rugged and old artificial arm for his disability on the right arm, but performs very diligently for the sake of some 50 disable inmates at this wellness resort.

Having understood the need for a sophisticated prosthetic arm for this senior officer, the Commander promptly requested Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) to explore possibilities of buying a unit from Germany at SVAB’s cost.

Exactly, a month ago, the SVAB finalized arrangements through the local agent for the German company and made him to fly to Germany for fixing of the prosthetic arm, worth about Rs 35 lakhs which was borne by the SVAB. The most modern new arm is able to hold weights and functions as that of a natural one.

The recipient on arrival in Sri Lanka on Monday (1) offered his profuse thanks to the SVAB President for her quick response and timely action in view of his requirement.
