President Rajapaksa Opens New Diyagama International Stadium

A WELL EQUIPPED international stadium built at Diyagama, Homagama to improve the sporting skills of sportsmen and women in the country which was named after the President was declared open by HE the President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Thursday (21) morning.

The first stage of this massive project was estimated to cost Rs. 390 million but the 7th Engineering Service Regiment (ESR) who is responsible for the construction completed it at a cost of only Rs. 118 million, by the Engineers of Sri Lanka Army.

This stadium which spans across 126 acres has a 400 m artificial track that has 9 lanes. It also consisted of an athletic ground, football and rugby ground and a pavilion with 3000 a seating capacity. The second stage which consisted of an indoor stadium, a swimming pool and an international cricket ground is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.  

This was constructed using only financial and material assistance reviewed for Mahinda Rajapaksa Foundation and with the least damage to the environment.

Cabinet Ministers, Tri-Forces Commanders, sportsmen and women who excelled nationally and internationally, school children and people from the area were also present on the occasion.
