President Presents Scholarships to War Heroes' Children

PRESIDENT Mahinda Rajapaksa and First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa yesterday presented over 200 scholarships to children whose fathers sacrificed their lives for the protection of the sovereignty and terrorial intergrity of Sri Lanka.

The scholarship scheme was implemented by the Seva Vanitha Organisation of the Defence Ministry in collaboration with the Bank of Ceylon (BoC).

The beneficiary students who are studying from Grade 1 to 5 will receive Rs. 20,000 and children from Grade 6 to 9 will be entitled to Rs. 30,000.

A Rs. 50,000 grant is also given to war heroe’s children studying from Grade 10 - 12.

These children received their pass books from President Mahinda Rajapaksa, First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and BoC Chairman Dr. Gamini Wickremesinghe.

These children were picked by the Defence Ministry Seva Vanitha Oraganisation during an islandwide mobile service held by Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. He met the kith and kin of service personnel killed in action in the North and East after terrorism was completely eradicated from the country.

The Ministry has taken several initiatives to address their problems and these children were picked from these mobile services in 19 districts. The officials had focused on the economic conditions of the families when a scholarship is granted to a student.

The officials announced that the beneficiary students will also get an insurance cover in the event of losing his or her mother.

They will receive 10 fold of what they have in their accounts as conpensation. (Courtesy : Daily News)
