President Launches National Drug Prevention Campaign in Jaffna

One more round of the ongoing National Drug Prevention Campaign got to a start in Jaffna this morning (9) at Jaffna Municipal ground during a ceremony, presided by the architect of the project, HE the President Maithripala Sirisena.

The island-wide drive, being launched at all district levels by the Presidential Task Force for Drug Prevention to be in line with the President Maithripala Sirisena’s manifesto, ‘Compassionate Government, a Stable Country’, intended to free Sri Lanka of all intoxicants and reduce the usage of alcohol, tobacco and smuggled narcotics, etc, has already been launched in a few districts.

During the ceremony, certificates were awarded to the Police and Navy officers and civilians who contributed to the arrest of drug dealers and smugglers. President in his speech to the occasion pointed out that Jaffna town, having a large number of liquor sales outlets records the highest number of alcoholics in the country, even next to the numbers in the chilly hills of Nuwara Eliya.    

A little girl from Jaffna welcomed the President and attendees in both Tamil and Sinhala languages and read out the pledge for prevention from use of narcotics. He was joined by the best achievers in the recent G.C.E. O/L, A/L examinations.

The District Coordinator for Prevention of Narcotics in an introductory speech afterwards explained the degree of harm that befalls Jaffna city.         

A large number of school students and parents participated in the day’s ceremony.

Launch of the project in the Jaffna District began upon arrival of the day’s Chief Guest, President Maithripala Sirisena, accompanied by Minister of Law and Order and Southern Development, Mr Sagala Rathnayake (MP), Minister Vijayakala Maheshwaran, Hon Douglas Devananda (MP), Secretary Defence, Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva, Navy and Air Force Commanders, Inspector General of Police and Major General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna.
