The world’s first Defence University, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) further expanded its wings by opening its Southern wing at Sevanagala, Embilipitiya on Tuesday (5) with President Maithripala Sirisena as the Chief Guest.
The opening ceremony, attended by State Minister of Defence Hon. Ruwan Wijewardene, Mr B.M.U.D Basnayake, Secretary Defence, Chief of Defence Staff General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva, Navy and Air Force Commanders, tri-service officers and a gathering of distinguished guests at the invitation of Major General Milinda Peiris, Vice Chancellor, KDU, got to a start after the President Maithripala Sirisena unveiled a special plaque and opened the new premises.
In his brief address to the occasion, President Sirisena underlined the importance of academic institutes of this nature to the youth and servicemen in the country and assured the maintenance of national security for the best interests of the country.
In 1981, the KDU saw its birth with the objective of producing tri-service personnel, professionally qualified in tertiary education, and this prestigious house of learning as at present has established 9 faculties, covering security and strategic studies, medicine, engineering, law, humanities and social sciences, management, allied health science, IT, specified environment and astronomical sciences, post graduate studies, etc.
The Southern Campus of the KDU will be confined for lectures in IT, specified environmental issues and astronomical studies.
