IN KEEPING with the theme “Api Vavamu Rata Nagamu” (Let’s grow to develop the country) initiated by Minister of Agriculture Development Maithripala Sirisena, a national level marathon runner V.H.P Simon of Dammina in Polonnaruwa conducted a marathon across Wanni and reached Jaffna on Friday (20) morning.
Forty Six year old this marathon idol, member of Polonnaruwa District Sports Club, started his three-day marathon run from Polonnaruwa on 18th November morning on which President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s birthday fell. He completed his marathon in three phases, first day from Polonnaruwa to Medawachchiya, second day from Medawachchiya to Kilinochchi and the final day from Kilinochchi upto Jaffna covering a distance of 300 km.
A team of medical personnel from Polonnaruwa hospital headed by Dr. Pushpika took a regular concern on Simon’s physical condition from the beginning to the end.
Despite the adverse weather condition, a large crowd gathered at the Jaffna Duraiappa Stadium to cheer this messenger from South.
Commander Security Forces Headquarters-Jaffna (SFHQ-J) Major General L.B.R. Mark, Jaffna Mayor Mrs. Yogshwaran Pathgunarajah, senior Military and Police officers and Jaffna citizens were among the well-wishers gathered at the Stadium.
During a function organized to receive Simon, gifts and mementoes to him.
Officials of the Mahaweli Authority and Sports Ministry and a group of residents in Polonnaruwa area gave their maximum support to Simon in his mission throughout.
