Philanthropist Requests Army to Distribute Huge Stock of Vegetables among the Poorest in Three Districts

Sri Lanka Army troops of the 141, 142, 143 and 144 Brigades of the 14 Division under the Security Force HQ-West on the guidelines given by Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Head of National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army are currently engaged in the distribution of a record quantity of 168 tonnes of fresh vegetables among the poorest of the poor in Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara and Puttalam districts, thanks to the generous gesture, made by Mr Piyasena Gamage, a philanthropist from Gampaha district.

Brigadier Irosh Wanigasekera, Director Supply and Transport of the Army on being informed of this generosity with the blessings of Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva dispatched 43 Army trucks and lorries to the Dambulla Economic Centre on Monday (20) for transport of the consignment of sweet pumpkin, cucumber, capsicum, beet, kekiri, tomatoes, brinjals, green chillies, worth more than Rs 12 million.

Upon the stock's arrival in Colombo, nearly 100-150 troops of the Security Force HQ-West promptly jumped into action irrespective of day or night and packed them separately into more than 15,000 separate bags, each weighing about 5-6 kg before they were taken this morning (21) for distribution among the poorest of the poor, including families who were entitled to receive the state allowance of Rs 5000/=. Above-mentioned troops of Brigades and Divisions sought the assistance of respective Grama Seva and other state officials for identification of those low-income groups for receipt of those big vegetable packets free of charge. Purchase of necessary environment-friendly bags for vegetable varieties was sponsored jointly by the Army and a few private donors at the request of the Director Supply and Transport.

The whole operation of distribution still in progress across three most populated districts is closely monitored by Major General Jayantha Senevirathna, Commander Security Forces- West and Major General A.S Ariyasinghe, General Officer Commanding 14 Division under the supervision of 141, 142, 143 and 144 Brigade Commanders, based in respective regional areas.
