The crowd of picnickers from Ratnapura had entered the forest reserve in the morning (21) to watch animals but the bus carrying them during its journey inside the jungles bogged down in a muddy patch, making impossible for them to move any longer. As they started panicking being unable to move the vehicle, one of them had however contacted the Police Emergency (119) for assistance. However, the Police in contact with the DMC sought the assistance of Army troops for rescue of those stranded civilians who had by then spent more than 8-9 hours in the jungle, infested with wild elephants and animals of fierce nature.

Troops headed by 143 Brigade Commander, Brigadier Dammika Dissanayake, Puttalum Assistant Director at DMC and Army personnel on board four Safari jeeps on receipt of the SOS call with necessary pulling accessories began moving into the jungles to search for the victims. As dusk fell, they managed to locate the bus in question, in which 11 kids and 30 women were travelling. At the time, 143 Brigade troops with Officers reached them, some of them were found crying and doing prayers as they were turning restless hour by hour.

Several troops of the Navy detachment at Kolankanaththa too joined the 143 Brigade rescue team on Safari jeeps for the operation. Troops after towing the large bus with the assistance of jeeps and others, directed tired picnickers to the Saint Jude's Church at Vanathawilluwa for rest, refreshments and sanitary needs. All four Safari jeep owners volunteered to join the rescue team free of charge, considering the humanitarian aspect of the mission.
