One more Sri Lankan soldier serving UN troops in Haiti died of an accident on Monday (21) evening following collapse of a concrete slab after he climbed on to a roof of a building in the area in order to observe a boat movement.
Lance Corporal J. B. A. J Jaysinghe of Beliatta succumbed to his injuries after he along with one of his fellow-soldiers was rushed to the UN hospital.
The deceased Lance Corporal was found trapped inside concrete debris after a part of the roof suddenly collapsed. Corporal A. L. Seneviratne however sustained minor injuries in the accident.
On Monday (21) morning another Sri Lankan soldier, Lance Corporal H. N. WIJESINGHE during a pre-dawn operation to capture a Police station at Petit-Goave, west of Port-au-Prince was killed. Three more soldiers, Sergeant K. T. J. S. L Wijethilake, Corporal M. G. A Premasiri and Lance Corporal D. M Janaka Udaya Kumara of the Sri Lanka Army received injuries during the UN operation.
Mortal remains of two soldiers are to be flown home shortly for conduct of their funerals with full military honours. All compensatory grants generally allocated to those who die in combat operations are to be made by Sri Lanka Army in addition to the UN entitlements.
