Old Traditions in Army to be Revived; VIR Mess Night Gets Underway

Peacetime has begun to pay dividends not only among ordinary denizens but also among different layers in the Army, as the most leading military outfit.

The Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) as one of the most respected units fighting on foot revived the Army’s long-standing tradition of having officers’ Mess Night on Thursday (25) at Kandalama Hotel, Dambulla, following direct instructions given by Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya to this effect with the objective of resurrecting hitherto suspended military traditions and formalities.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya gracing the VIR Mess Night as Chief Guest lauded the Colonel of the Regiment for arrangements since it was the first time a Mess Night of this magnitude was held after absence of 23 years.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, now determined to re-invigorate these age-old practices and traditions that had been in existence since the times of colonial masters, expressed the belief that this re-introduction of this tradition would be picked by all other Regiments in the Army.

The visiting Commander was welcomed by Major General R.V. Samarathunga, Colonel of the Regiment of VIR on arrival at the Hotel for the Mess Night function. A large gathering of officers attended the evening.
