Novel ‘Kite Flying’ in Jaffna Colours ‘Thai Pongal’ Day

A large gathering of youngsters, kids and civilians flocked to the Kankesanthurai coastal area on Thai Pongal day (14) to witness and enjoy a mammoth kite-flying festival, held along the beach as a novel feature to the commemoration of this festival of Hindu faith.

Troops of the Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna, in close collaboration with the Jaffna-based Elavalai Youth Club as an addition to the colourfulness of the very festival took the initiative in this regard following guidelines given by the Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna, Major General Sujeewa Senarath Yapa who afterwards instructed the 51 Division HQ troops to organize this rare and eye-catching spectacle.

More than 200 kites produced to the festival by civil and military members were flown to the skies in the presence of the Governor of the Northern Province, Mr Jeevan Thiagarajah, General Officer Commanding, 51 Division, Major General Chandana Wickramasinghe, Divisional Secretary - Tellippalai, Government Officials, Senior Military Officers and thousands of civilians who had flocked there nearly after two years due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

The festival was made a reality on a proposal of Major General Sujeewa Senarath Yapa, the Commander Security Forces - Jaffna in close consultation with the Divisional Secretariat Office – Thelippalei and different youth clubs in the area.

General Officer Commanding, 51 Division, Major General Chandana Wickramasinghe coordinated and encouraged military members to join the occasion. The Governor of Northern Province Mr Jeevan Thiagarajah witnessed the festival and paid his gratitude to the Commander of the Army and all Security Force members in the peninsula for military contribution, provided to decorate the festival.
