Norway Playing Double Game: Mahanayake

THE Asgiriya Mahanayake Most Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkhitha Thera said the Norwegian government had given maximum support to the LTTE while talking peace with the Sri Lankan government.

Speaking to Rodney Perera, Jayantha Dissanayake and AMJ Sadik - the Ambassadors designate to Norway, Kenya and Brazil,  at the Asgiriya Maha Viharaya on Sunday, the prelate said Norway was providing support to the Tigers as it did in the past despite the fact that the leaders of the Scandinavian state showed a different face to the Sri Lankan Government. He argued that the LTTE could not have staged an attack on the Sri Lankan embassy in the Norwegian capital.

Oslo without the connivance of the Norwegians and added that one could not  expect such a country to be supportive to Sri Lanka if it allowed our embassy and the Sinhalese in that country to be attacked.

The Thera also expressed concern over the future safety and security of Sri Lankans living in countries like Britain, though their safety has been ensured at the moment.

The prelate was of the view that politicians in Tamil Nadu were attempting to exert pressure on the Sri Lankan Government simply due to the upcoming General Election in that country and said there was no such pressure from the southern state of Andra Pradesh where he travelled recently.

He advised the Ambassadors designate to take steps to counter adverse publicity carried out by pro-LTTE elements and charged that this had not been done by our ambassadors in the past.

The Thera further said it was the European countries that usually exert pressure on Sri Lanka on various issues than Asian countries do. “People make money from these countries by accusing Sri Lanka that Tamils are being harassed here.
