NOCPCO Task Force Justifies Imposition of Quarantine Curfew in Vulnerable Areas

The Task Force at the National Operations Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) this afternoon (23) during one more emergency session closely reviewed the status quo, current developments and urged the public to strictly adhere to safety guidelines since the information attributes the spread of the virus to less care for health guidelines, congested movements and living patterns, holding of public functions and gatherings, and irresponsible ways of behavior of some people.

Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Head, NOCPCO, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army chaired the Task Force meeting, attended by all members and experts in the field.

Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva after a welcome note briefed the present status of COVID 19 outbreak and Peliyagoda fish market clusters. Imposition of quarantine curfew in Dematagoda, Modera,Wellampitiya, Kotahena, etc due to high density of the population and presence of most of the fish market associates was discussed and justified since larger groups of contacts have been traced from those areas in question.

Present strategies in keeping with the conceptual notion of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis for betterment of the whole nation were also discussed at length as many suggestions in varied forms have been made to the NOCPCO.

The meeting also agreed that curfew imposition should be made on case by case evaluation since there does not exist any need as such to go for any total curfew in the country. However, such curfew practices could be considered for the whole country taking stock of new threats of the spreading virus, particularly from areas adjoining harbours, etc. "The next 24 hours will be more critical as more and more cases are reported from vulnerable harbours including Galle, Aluthgama-Beruwala. PCR tests have been increased in and around those areas as many of them were directly or otherwise connected to the cases traced from the Peliyagoda cluster, " the Commander told the gathering.

The general public are urged to restrict their unwanted movements in society and stay safe in the houses by adhering to health guidelines. He stated that Galkanda Quarantine Centre with 400 beds has been converted to run as a COVID-19 treatment hospital and the Army handed over it to the health officials today (23). Conduct of continuous awareness programmes with better health habits is recommended further as it would greatly reduce the risk of infection of the virus among health workers, the Commander remarked.
