Major General Jayantha Seneviratne on Friday (6) assumed office as the new Commander of the Security Force Headquarters - West (SFHQ-West) during a simple ceremony at his office in the Panagoda Army Cantonment.
In conformity with military traditions, a Guard Turnout plus a Guard of Honour saluted the incoming West Commander soon after his arrival at the SFHQ-West premises.
In his new office, members of the Maha Sangha chanted ‘Seth Pirith’ and invoked blessings on the new appointment as he signed a formal document to signify the acceptance of the new office.
Giving a symbolic importance to the day, the new Commander was afterwards invited to plant a sapling in the SFHQ-West complex.
After a while, the new West Commander, setting out his scope of work and duties, addressed the troops and outlined the importance of working as a team for the prosperity of the country and promotion of the Army image.
Major General Seneviratne, prior to this new appointment was the Commander, Security Forces – Mullaittivu. He succeeded Major General Mahinda Mudalige who were to retire from the Army.
Meanwhile, the retiring Major General Mahinda Mudalige, hours before his relinquishment of appointment as Commander, Security Forces - West was honoured in a Guard Turnout and a Guard of Honour, presented by Sri Lanka Light Infantry troops. On the same occasion, Major General Mudalige was invited to open the new cottage for security checks at the entrance to the Panagoda Army Cantonment.
On Thursday (5), Major General Mudalige did not forget to speak to all ranks in the SFHQ-West and joined an all rank refreshments. He thanked each and every soldier for the support extended to him during his tenure.
